Alerts may have heightened tension

Despite repeated denials by police of any evidence of so-called "polar bear hunting" or other racial motivations for campus crime, many believe that increased crime alerts last fall led to increased racial tension on campus.

Some also have accused police — who deny the allegation — of racially profiling African American males and of increasing crime prevention efforts at Campustown and other events attended primarily by African Americans.
